Eskom has confirmed that group chief financial officer Calib Cassim retired on 31 October 2026 after 24 years at the power utility. Cassim will continue as acting group CFO until his successor's appointment takes effect, Eskom said in a statement.
Eskom said it will provide updates on the appointment of a new group CFO in due course. No successor has been named.
The turnaround he leaves behind
Eskom said Cassim played a key role in strengthening its financial position and described the utility's return to profitability as a fitting milestone. Published coverage says Eskom posted its second consecutive profitable year in September 2026.
Cassim also served as acting group chief executive for a year. When Eskom first announced his planned retirement in August, he said he was confident his successor would build on the turnaround: “I will take a rest and watch Eskom succeed.”
Eskom says it has gone 532 consecutive days without load shedding, with an energy availability factor of 68.15%, the highest in six years, and that 6,439MW of generation capacity has been recovered under its Generation Recovery Plan. It says diesel spending is down R4.81 billion year on year.
Succession
In August, Eskom said Cassim would retire during the financial year ending March 2027 and that it aimed to appoint a replacement before the end of the 2026 calendar year, according to published coverage of that announcement. The latest statement, as reported, gives 31 October as the retirement date and says only that an update on the appointment will follow in due course.
