A Ferrari SF90 Stradale preserved during the Special Investigating Unit's (SIU) Tembisa Hospital investigation goes up for online auction from 8am today, after the Pretoria High Court dismissed an urgent bid to stop the sale.

According to reports of the auction listing, bidding closes on Wednesday 11 November. Proceeds will be held in an interest-bearing trust account while the related civil proceedings continue.

What the court decided

Businessman Hangwani Maumela and the trustees of the MHR Maumela Family Trust asked the High Court in Pretoria to block a Special Tribunal order that authorised the SIU-appointed curator, Jacobus Gideon Louw van Wyk, to sell the vehicle. Court reports say the application was dismissed.

The court found the Tribunal's order was interim and was not automatically suspended by an appeal, according to those reports. It also found the applicants had not shown a clear right, reasonable prospects of success on appeal or irreparable harm. The trustees were ordered to pay the costs of the application.

The applicants had argued that the car was likely to appreciate in value and should not be sold. The curator told the Tribunal in August that selling the Ferrari was necessary to end storage, insurance and maintenance costs, according to the reports.

The price

Reports put the minimum price at R9.5 million, and say the car was preserved by the SIU in September 2025. One report gives the auction starting price as R8 million, which does not match the R9.5 million figure. We have not been able to confirm which applies.

SIU spokesperson Selby Makgotho welcomed the ruling, saying it affirmed the state's mechanisms to protect preserved assets from losing value, according to a report of the SIU's response. The SIU has said evidence of potential criminal conduct has been referred to the National Prosecuting Authority.
